MINNA: As the world celebrates the International Day of the Girl Child, policymakers have been urged to formulate policies that would increase access to education for the girl child.

The wife of the Niger State Governor, Dr Amina Abubakar Bello in a message to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child 2022 described the girl child as positive changemakers who have since proved to be changemakers in various spaces.

She urged governments at all levels to make school environments conducive for learning for the girl child while also calling for increased inclusion of females in governance.

According to her, “girls have globally proven over time that when allowed access to education, skill acquisition and opportunities they will not only be agents of change but positive role models in the society.”

“There is a need for governments to emphasize investing for the future of the girl child’s capacity and potentials, by providing them with a conducive environment for education and learning, to better identify and explore their full potentials,” she said.

The theme for this year’s International Day of the Girl Child 2022 is “Our time is now, our right, our future”

According to the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), despite the resources put into this cause, girls around the world still face unprecedented challenges to their education and their physical and mental wellness.
